Sony and SanDisk have announced plans for yet another memory format, with the ultra-small new Memory Stick Micro (M2) destined for use in multimedia mobile phones.

Memory Stick Micro (M2)

The card measures just 15mm by 12.5mm and is 1.2mm thick, making it truly micro although we can't help but feel it's simply too small to be practical, and surely is just asking to be lost if taken out of the device that you're using it in.

An impressively large 32GB of storage space is touted by SanDisk as being theoretically possible, although the company make a point of noting no such sized card is planned for release currently - just as well considering the price would no doubt be hugely expensive seeing as some 2GB Memory Sticks currently retail in excess of £300.

Memory Stick adapters will also be available allowing the M2 to slot in to a normal full sized Memory Stick reader such as on your PC, although it's not clear if a similar "M2 to Duo" adapter will be released or not when the M2 cards go on sale during the first half of 2006.
